Marty Straton Wins Nettie Finkle Award
The Nettie Finkle Award honors an individual whose volunteer work embodies the standards set by Nettie Finkle. It recognizes an individual who exemplifies volunteerism and whose commitment to bringing hope, promise and opportunity into the lives of others has left a lasting, positive impact on a person, group or community at large.
Each year we ask our partner agencies to nominate a volunteer with their organization for this great award. After all the nominees are submitted a Board Committee reviews them and picks the winner. This year’s winner was Marty Straton – who has been a volunteer at Opportunity, Inc. since 1999. She was introduced to the organization by her mother, Marion “Chee” Matthews, a 35-year volunteer and has passionately continued her legacy. She has volunteered her time serving on the Board of Directors and the Education and Curriculum Committee. She reads to the children, coordinates school supplies and for the past four years she has served as head of the annual appeal. Through this role she has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars to support the center’s work. Marty also spearheaded the “Opportunity Ambassadors,” a group of individuals serving as advocates for the mission of Opportunity, Inc. As head of this group she introduces new friends to the agency and works tirelessly promoting the importance of early childhood education and advocating on behalf of the children.
