GRAB YOUR HAT AND READ WITH A CAT!
READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place each year on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens and BOOKS! At the Town of Palm Beach United Way we celebrate March 3rd because we know the importance reading has on a child’s education.
Reading proficiency by the 3rd grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success, yet unfortunately many low-income children miss this crucial milestone. About 67% of children nationwide – more than 80% of them from low-income families – are not proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade. This has significant and long-term consequences not only for each of the children, but for our communities and nation as a whole.
The Town of Palm Beach United Way supports many programs that focus on increasing literacy and helping children succeed in school and academic settings. Because of our generous donors, this year we invested over $850,000 in 14 local agencies providing preschool and afterschool education, mentoring and adult, family and caregiver education and support. These programs are working to close the gap and ensure all children in Palm Beach County are reading on grade level by 3rd grade and helping to ensure their success throughout school and into their adult lives.
So on the 3rd Day of March we not only will be celebrating the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the author whose whimsical wordplay continues to enchant readers around the world, but we will be celebrating Read Across America Day, and reiterate our commitment to raising a generation of eager learners and bringing an outstanding education within every child’s reach.
