National Volunteer Week

by PBUnitedWay

Opp Inc TY no background

I read an article last week titled the “Independent Sector’s Value of Volunteer Time”.   The article spouted on about the value of a volunteers’ time per state, and how that value is calculated and what percent of the population volunteers, etc – You get the picture.  What the article didn’t speak to was the value of a volunteers’ time to a nonprofit.

Most non-profit organizations could not survive without the work of their wonderful volunteers.  We at the Town of Palm Beach United Way are no exception.  I have said many times to donors, my staff and members of the community – without our volunteers the Town of Palm Beach United Way would be “dead in the water.”  We are a staff of four with hundreds of volunteers raising and distributing the dollars in our annual campaign.  These hardworking volunteers also are Board members, Finance, Audit, and Personnel Committee members.   They stuff envelopes and put stamps on thousands of letters.    All this for a “thank you” or “we so appreciate your time.”   It is truly an amazing thing.

Dr. Seuss said it best, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It’s not.”

So here we are in the middle of National Volunteer Week, a time to honor those who help others, and a time to encourage others to help, and we at the Town of Palm Beach United Way are so very grateful not only for the hundreds of volunteers who work tirelessly to improve the lives of others but to all those other volunteers that are helping their churches, community centers, and other organizations.   It’s hard to put a value on that.
