WEEK 4 OF ACTION: PLANT A TREE
Last year, the Town of Palm Beach United Way gave back to the Gratitude House, one of our funded partner agencies, by planting a tree on behalf of our volunteers. The tree was planted with the understanding that it would bring spiritual and personal value to these women who congregate outside for activities and reflection.
This week we celebrate Earth Day. Started in 1970, this designated day of April 22 has become an annual reminder of our responsibility to be good stewards of the Earth. You can contribute to a healthier Earth in multiple ways: help with community garden, pick up trash, purchase biodegradable products, and commit to reduce, reuse and recycle. And one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to positively affect the environment – PLANT A TREE!
Trees are easily seen as undervalued by many, but as the benefits of trees are so extreme, so is the need for planting more and more. Trees are in our parks, they line our streets, our backyards all while leaving an aesthetic quality of life by creating natural elements and habitats for our unique wildlife, all things that can be taken for granted.
1 acre of trees produces enough oxygen for 18 people every day. Planting trees remains to be one of the most cost-effective ways to draw excess carbon emissions from the atmosphere. 1 acre of trees can absorb the same amount of CO2 produced by a car driven 26,000 miles.
3 trees planted strategically around a house can reduce energy use by up to 50%. Also, trees add beauty, increase property values, and reduce stress. 1 tree planted by every family would reduce 1 billion pounds of CO2 annually from our atmosphere.
Help sustain our Earth, Pick up a shovel and plant away.
Please share with us how you made your week count. No, it doesn’t need to take place on Monday – Monday just gets us excited about what the week has to offer, what we (ourselves) have to offer.
