roosevelt quote

When Zachary Bonner was 7 years old he became an advocate for homeless youth, and created the Little Red Wagon Foundation. And when he was 17, he broke the world record for “The Most Food Collected in a 24 Hour Period – One Location.”

Adopted at age three, out of her native Peru, 17-year-old Ana Dodsen grew up priviledged in the US.   However, her Peruvian roots always called to her, and at 11, her adopted parents took her back to visit the land she barely remembered.   Devastated by the poverty she saw in Peruvian orphanages, Ana founded Peruvian Hearts, an organization that provides much needed support and supplies to needy children in Peru.

And in Palm Beach County, seven members of the Town of Palm Beach United Way’s Youth United spent three consecutive summers organizing and collecting school supplies for Title 1 schools in Palm Beach County.  Each year breaking their collection from the prior year.

Giving back to the community is on most people’s to-do list, but it takes time and a commitment. A recent study from the National Conference on Citizenship shows that Millennials and teens are more likely to volunteer than other recent generations, and are more civically engaged. Our youth, given the opportunity, will take every chance they get to make a change in the world around them.

There are so many great things coming from our young people in this day and age it is hard not to celebrate their drive, their courage, and their victories.

So this week, remember, that our children and youth need to be celebrated for what they do and what they can do to change the world around us. Encourage, Embrace, and Empower our youth today and every day, because this will drive them to Excellence, and it may be all they need.
