live united volunteerThe average life expectancy has grown by 30 years in some areas of the world. All sorts of factors contribute to long lives; but more and more, we are learning that volunteering contributes to a healthy and independent lifestyle no matter what our age, but especially for older adults.

Friday was National Senior Citizen Day. This day was created by President Reagan and Congress in 1988, for the purpose of highlighting ways to show gratitude to America’s senior citizens. One way to show older adults that we appreciate their contributions to our society is to volunteer, either alongside them or through projects designed to make life better for them.

Growing up, I remember volunteering with my grandparents at their church and a local food pantry – what a great time we always had. When I got a little older and I was in high school, we would make visits to local Alzheimer’s facilities and make Valentine’s Day cards while hosting a party, play Bingo and even Let’s Make a Deal. It was a wonderful experience for both me and my grandparents.

The next time you are signing up to volunteer, think about a retiree you know.  Could they volunteer with you?  Volunteering is an important part of an active, healthy lifestyle, especially as we age. There is a significant relationship between volunteering and good health, in addition to the social benefits brought about by volunteering.

Tapping in to the wisdom, experience and enthusiasm of seniors could do a world of good for them and your community.
