WEEK 24 OF ACTION: LITERACY DAY, GO READ A BOOK!

read a book

You might not know this, but Sunday was National Read-A-Book Day. I hope you turned off the TV and all your electronics and read a book.

Research has shown that reading is an excellent way to stimulate brain activity, improve memory and reduce stress.  Reading can also improve critical thinking and comprehension skills and can make people better writers.

The best part of reading books to me is that it gives me someplace to go (without traveling), and it’s a great way to learn about other times and other places.

Meg Rosoff explained it best when she said, “When you read a book, the neurons in your brain fire overtime, deciding what the characters are wearing, how they’re standing, and what it feels like the first time they kiss. No one shows you. The words make suggestions. Your brain paints the pictures.”

Did you know? 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning to read; and students who don’t read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school.

So before you curl up with your favorite magazine or a new book, remember how you learned to read and consider paying it forward – perhaps to a young reader. There’s plenty of ways you could do that.

For example, the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County has a new program called Building Better Readers. The program leverages the power of community volunteers in helping Palm Beach County’s highest need children read at grade level. In the first year of Building Better Readers, the Literacy Coalition recruited, trained, placed and supported 79 volunteers who tutored 241 first and second grade children at 17 Title I schools. Many children started with minimal reading skills but the volunteers did such an amazing job that 74% of the children were at least 50% closer to reading on grade level by the end of the year.

Volunteer tutors make a commitment to tutor three children, 30 minutes each, twice a week. If you think you might be interested in helping here’s the contact information:  561-767-3366 or jheavilin@LiteracyPBC.org. BTW, I just filled out the volunteer application!

Don’t wait! National Read-A-Book Day, or any day, would be a great day to pledge to change a life through reading.
