UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL: REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11TH
I think this is a strong message that we should all reflect on as AMERICANS, from where we were 14 years ago today, to where we are now.
Can you believe that today is the 14th anniversary of September 11th? Personally, it feels like it just happened yesterday. I was driving down to a college class and listened to the second tower be hit, live on the radio, I was the only one in my class that knew that the second tower had been hit. It was like I was in a daze, disbelief, in shock. How could this happen to a country that stood tall, stood proud, stood UNITED?
Following the attacks, WE, as Americans stood UNITED. WE came together to support each other, to grieve, and to talk about what WE were experiencing as a nation, as a community to find solace and hope in each other.
Firefighters and Police officers, from all over the country, traveled to New York City to help in the rescue efforts and support their fellow brothers and sisters in helping out in any way that they could. They stood UNITED, worked together to help the communities, and were HEROES.
I think John Kerry said it best, “Remember the hours after September 11th, when we came together as ONE to answer the attack against our homeland. We drew strength when our firefighters ran upstairs and risked their lives so that others might live; when rescuers rushed into smoke and fire at the Pentagon; when the men and women of Flight 93 sacrificed themselves to save our nation’s Capitol; when flags were hanging from front porches all across America, and strangers became friends. It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in all of us.”
As we reflect back 14 years ago, on that day with everything that our country, our nation, endured; we should also think about how we came together as one to LIVE UNITED.
LIVING UNITED: means to shift the focus from ME to WE. It’s about making the decision to help make a neighborhood, a community, this nation a better place by STANDING TOGETHER, by LIVING UNITED. Let’s use today not only to remember the grief but also to learn and pay forward, the love and togetherness that we felt that day and share that every day; because at the end of the day, UNITED WE STAND, but DIVIDED WE FALL. Remember all those we lost that day.
