WEEK 30 OF ACTION: STAND UP FOR OTHERS
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal of this month is to encourage communities to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness and decrease the impact of bullying on people of all ages.
Bullying is a huge problem in our schools these days but can also affect us as adults. This week specifically is Stand Up For Others Week. I believe that we can encourage our children to stand up for others being bullied, but we ourselves can also stand up for others who we believe are being mistreated.
Have you ever seen a person being mistreated? We all probably have at some point in our lives. Sometimes people just need an advocate, someone to stand up for them. Not everyone has the courage to stand up to someone who is mistreating them. We all need a little help and push in life, especially someone to support and advocate for us when we are being mistreated.
If you see or hear something you don’t think is kind, saying nothing is just as bad as partaking. Do not be afraid to stand up for someone in the same way you would hope someone would stand up for you. Strong people stand up for themselves but stronger people stand up for others. Whenever one person stands up and says “wait a minute, this is wrong,” it helps other people to do the same.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said it best, “never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
So stand up. Be an advocate. Be more than a bystander. Be a light in a too often dim world.
