WEEK 31 OF ACTION: SOCKTOBER
As I fold laundry, it always seems that my most worn and ratty item are my socks. We wear socks nearly every day, if not daily. In my household, we go through socks like they’re going out of style. I have the luxury of buying new socks when I need them. Now, think what would happen if I didn’t have that ability.
October is a month with so many different awareness events. But an important occurrence that seems to be forgotten is SOCKTOBER.
Socktober is a nationwide event to help collect socks or donations for socks for homeless shelters in our community. On any given day in Palm Beach County 1,421 individuals and families are homeless. Socks are the most requested item at any homeless shelter, yet one of the least donated. Because of the shortage of socks, the homeless are constantly at risk of disease and infection.
So what can you do about this? Start a sock drive. This is a great project to work on with your family, your neighbors, your schools, and your workplace. There is strength in numbers and the more socks collected and donated the more people will be helped.
If a sock drive isn’t your thing, but want to help out it is as simple as this – DONATE. Donate these socks to the Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County. Their mission is to provide sufficient resources to end homelessness through housing, education, advocacy and community collaboration. You can also bring them to the Lord’s Place. At the Lord’s Place their mission is to transform lives by providing solutions that break the cycle of homelessness for the most vulnerable and neglected in Palm Beach County.
