WEEK 32 OF ACTION: NO ONE NOWHERE AT NO TIME SHOULD GO HUNGRY
When I think about hunger, my mental image is of emaciated children in developing nations. In the United States and even in Palm Beach County, hunger is an unseen problem.
But it’s a problem the family up the street may struggle with. Maybe not every day – many families make just enough to get by. But if the car breaks down, or someone gets sick, those families are forced to make tough choices. And sometimes the only choice is to not buy food.
On a national scale, 49 million people in America struggle with hunger. In the state of Florida, more than 3.3 million people live in homes with not enough food on the table. In Palm Beach County alone, 202,110 people suffer from hunger, and 23.6% of these individuals are children. Every day, both nationally and in our own neighborhoods, people are affected by hunger and are not able to get the proper food and nutrition they need.
National Hunger Awareness Week is held each year the week before Thanksgiving (November 14 through November 22). This is a time of year for all of us to think about what we are thankful for, and a perfect time to share our compassion with those who are experiencing hunger. Throughout Palm Beach County there are a slew of food pantries, two food banks, and other places to donate nonperishable food.
So how can you help? 1. DONATE FUNDS 2. DONATE FOOD or 3. VOLUNTEER. Here are some agencies that you can help: 211 Palm Beach, CROS Ministries, Feeding South Florida, Glades Initiative, and Palm Beach County Food Bank.
Hunger is a real dilemma in our community. Tell your friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues to join forces, donate, raise awareness, and end hunger once and for all.
