WEEK 37 OF ACTION – GIVING BACK (PART 1 OF 4)
“Give yourself entirely to those around you. Be generous with your blessings. A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.” – Maraboli
This time of the year it is easy to get caught up in the shopping, buying and giving of gifts to others. Spreading holiday cheer is definitely not cheap – it will cost you!
But for the 45% of people in Palm Beach County living at or below the federal poverty line, the reality of the holiday season looks much different. Their wish lists aren’t filled with items from Nordstrom, Apple store, or Saks – their gift guide reads more like a Walmart shopping list full of basic survival and household items.
Every year, my family adopts a family at a local nonprofit agency. We are supplied with a want list for each member of the family, and together we shop, wrap and deliver the items. The family changes each year, but the list is always similar – socks, food, toothbrush, diapers, shoes, ball, cleaning supplies, and an occasional blender or toaster – a list very different than my own families.
When you share small acts of kindness, you are giving back more than you might think.
