WEEK 42 OF ACTION – BE A MENTOR
“Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.” –Rita Pierson
For those who watched New Year’s come and go without settling on an annual resolution, we have one for you. Since January is National Mentoring Month, we suggest you resolve to become a mentor to a local boy or girl who could use the knowledge and wisdom you have acquired throughout the years.
Mentoring helps young people to understand that there is someone who cares about them, assures them that they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter.
1 in 3 young people will grow up without a mentor. Research shows that young adults who were at risk for falling off track but had a mentor are:
- 55% more likely to enroll in college
- 78% more likely to volunteer regularly
- 90% are interested in becoming a mentor and
- 130% more likely to hold leadership positions.
Take Stock in Children has a wonderful Mentor Program and incredible results – 2,000,000 mentor volunteer hours and over 8,200 mentors in their program. Click here to see how you can get involved.
Milagro Center also has a mentoring program called Mentoring Miracles. This program provides site-based mentoring for students enrolled in the STARS program and connects children with positive adult role models. Click here to see how you can get involved in Mentoring Miracles.
