Volunteer Spotlight: Chris Cameron
Our monthly Volunteer Spotlight recognizes Town of Palm Beach United Way volunteers who are passionate, inspiring and dedicated. They are individuals committed to transforming lives and who invest in our vision of building healthy and strong communities.
Chris Cameron has been a volunteer at the Town of Palm Beach United Way for the past 5 years. He has served as a Loaned Executive and on our Allocation committee. We sat down with Chris to ask him a few questions about volunteering at the Town of Palm Beach United Way and what it means to him.
What made you choose to volunteer with the Town of Palm Beach United Way?
I had expressed interest to my boss at The Breakers Hotel about getting more involved in community volunteer work. I came to be asked to represent the Town of Palm Beach United Way as The Breakers’ Loaned Executive. After my two year term, I very much wished to stay involved in an organization that I believed so strongly in. From then on, I became a lifelong member of the agency’s Allocation committee.
What do you like most about volunteering with the Town of Palm Beach United Way?
I feel the key to the Town of Palm Beach United Way is its teamwork. I am always made to feel like a family member coming home whenever I return to the office by Beth and her kind and thankful team. It’s like going home to Boston for Thanksgiving!
What have you learned by being a volunteer with us?
Patience, kindness, the power of teamwork and to be more open minded. There is no greater feeling than that of helping others to fulfill their potential; it defies description. Helping others is like helping yourself.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
I enjoy spending time with my lovely family and six month old daughter Alexis Chase. I hope to leave the world a better place for her and hers.
What is your most memorable volunteer moment?
In addition to working with the United Way, for the past two years I have been involved with the Carl Wilson Foundation founded by Beach Boy Carl Wilson’s sons to honor their dad and to fund cancer research and aid those afflicted with the disease. Along with Carl’s brother-in-law, Billy Hinsche, (Dino, Desi and Billy fame), we restored and produced an unreleased recording of Carl’s from 1981 originally intended as the theme song to a documentary about Elvis Presley. Difficult to describe, it was truly profound to have the opportunity to produce a Carl Wilson session. As Billy told me, “Justyn Wilson was particularly moved at hearing the sound of his father’s voice.” It doesn’t get any better than that! All earned proceeds from the download solely benefit the foundation. Feel free to look for “This Is Elvis” from your favorite music provider. Though often intangible, there is a reward for every act of kindness – and download! We live and love united.
