Agency Spotlight: Palm Beach Habilitation Center
Palm Beach Habilitation Center has been a Town of Palm Beach United Way partner agency since 1987. They provide employment, job placement, residential, education and training, recreation and retirement services for mentally, emotionally and physically disabled adults.
One program funded by the Town of Palm Beach United Way is Crew2U. The Crew2U program provides employment opportunities in the community for individuals with significant disabilities. The program serves adults with disabilities who have a desire to be employed in the community yet need intensive support and services to become successful in achieving their goals.
Michael, a 37-year-old, had a difficult time academically while in school because he found it too challenging. With the persistence of his mother, Michael was diagnosed with autism. After Michael graduated from high-school his mother tried to help him find a job. This proved to be difficult because of his disability. Michael finally found an environment in which he thrived when he was introduced to the Palm Beach Habilitation Center. The Palm Beach Habilitation Center’s Crew2U Program enabled Michael to become employed at Florida Power and Light. He is able to go to work knowing that if any work related issues arise he has the support of his employment specialist and supervisors to help him resolve them. Michael has worked at FPL for over five years and reports that he enjoys his job and does it well. His supervisors and co-workers say he is an asset to the crew.
How it Makes a Difference
The Crew2U Program enables participants who need additional support and supervision to work in a competitive community work setting. Participants are given the opportunity to experience work and earn at or above minimum wage for the work they complete. Without the support provided through this program, individuals would be unable to work and they would remain unemployed. Transferable vocational skills are developed and strengthened which will help them continue to grow and develop even when they are no longer participating in services and have obtained individualized job placement in the community.
