Agency Spotlight: Adopt-a-Family
Adopt-A-Family has been a Town of Palm Beach United Way partner agency since 2000. They restore families with children in crisis to stability and self-sufficiency by providing access to all-encompassing services which include housing and quality after-school activities.
One program funded by the Town of Palm Beach United Way is Project Grow. This program is a licensed afterschool/out-of-school program that serves up to 60 children in kindergarten through fifth grade from formerly homeless and low-income families in Palm Beach County.
Emily was a kindergartener who was reserved, shy and spoke little English. Her parents spoke even less English and struggled to support her family by having a wage that would consistently pay the bills. The family was often just one paycheck away from the loss of their home. Emily’s academic performance was poor, but as she entered Adopt-A-Family’s Project Grow she started to gain confidence and improve academically. Now, Emily has learned more English, and is excelling academically in the 2nd grade.
How It Makes a Difference
The lives of children in this program are improved in several ways. They feel safe and feel their environment is stable, they receive educational opportunities allowing them to reach their full academic potential, they are in an environment that helps build self-confidence and pride, they are given the opportunity to interact equally with their peers and they are given enrichment opportunities otherwise unavailable.
