Agency Spotlight: Take Stock in Children

by PBUnitedWay

Take Stock in Children has been a Town of Palm Beach United Way partner agency since 2006. They promote personal worth, self-responsibility and academic success for deserving low-income children by providing a unique set of resources including mentors, scholarships, long-term support, student advocacy and a guaranteed educational opportunity.

One program funded by the Town of Palm Beach United Way is Student/Mentor Support Services Program. This program helps to ensure that students graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills they need to complete their post-secondary education and to successfully enter the work force.

Meet Veronica
Veronica’s dad lost his job, as many people did in 2008, and the loss of her uncle all in the same time period was rough on the family. With minimum income and trying to get through her first year of high school, needless to say, it was not the easiest. With Take Stock in Children’s help, her parents could afford to pay for her housing away from home and she moved to Orlando to attend Valencia College and then University of Central Florida. She declared a major in Human Communications and fell in love with it. Veronica currently works full time in downtown Orlando in marketing at a construction company and has recently made the decision to give back by joining Take Stock in Children as a mentor in Orlando.

How It Makes a Difference
Take Stock in Children’s purpose is to provide a pathway to success for at-risk youth by providing students with the resources they need to achieve academic success: one-on-one mentoring, college readiness coaching, college scholarships, post-secondary retention services and hope for a brighter future.
