Volunteer Spotlight: Robin Martin
Our monthly Volunteer Spotlight recognizes Town of Palm Beach United Way volunteers who are passionate, inspiring and dedicated. They are individuals committed to transforming lives and who invest in our vision of building healthy and strong communities.
Robin Martin has been a volunteer at the Town of Palm Beach United Way for 4 years. Robin serves on our Allocation Committee and our Board of Trustees. We sat down with Robin to ask him a few questions about volunteering at the Town of Palm Beach United Way and what it means to him.
What made you choose to volunteer with the Town of Palm Beach United Way?
I wanted to become more of a part of our community, not just on the island of Palm Beach, but in the County as well, a broader geography more representative of the world where we live. TPBUW has always had a reputation as a well-run organization that is an excellent steward of its donor’s contributions as well as a commitment to transparency, honesty and straightforwardness. That is the type of organization I enjoy supporting with my time and resources.
What do you like most about volunteering with the Town of Palm Beach United Way?
Two things make a great impression on me each year on the Allocations Committee: The first-hand experience of visiting the agencies we support and meeting their leadership and clients; and working with the dedicated and knowledgeable TPBUW staff and volunteers on my team.
What have you learned by being a volunteer with us?
The true social needs of our neighbors in Palm Beach County are not apparent if one stays isolated on the island of Palm Beach. I know from the county-wide media that life is challenging for many people in the County. Seeing for myself the work that the agencies perform and meeting many of their clients makes it clear to me how great the needs are and how important it is for us to help in any way we can.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?
My interests span the gamut from being part of an angel investor network, to being on the boards of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County and the Palm Beach Civic Association, to enjoying travel and playing bridge with my wife and partner, Jocelyn (who is also a member of the TPBUW Allocations Committee). I also like to go on early morning bicycle rides by the ocean!
What is your most memorable volunteer moment?
It’s difficult to single out one moment, but I always marvel at the resourcefulness, imagination, and dedication of leadership and staff of the agencies and the gratefulness of their clients.
